The precipitous plunge of Vesper Sparrow populations has been largely because of changing land use practices. What has caused the decline? They really stick out when you see them with other little brown jobs.

In 1952, at least in the US, no one wanted to be a Debbie Downer. In 1952, the continental United States was looking pretty good actually on the extinction front. That’s one reason, probably the biggest reason, why we don’t have centennials for animals that become extinct in the wild. Then the 80s happened.
