The African Wild Dog. The list kinds crystalized during my first big trip, on which I knocked off my two big targets (the manta ray and whale shark) but since then beyond seeing an antelope (and then many other different kinds), it hasn’t budged much at all. A beaked whale. Any beaked whale. Hammerhead shark.

On the mainland they face predation from domestic cats, dogs, genets, mongoose and Cape Gulls which steal their chicks and eggs. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean. White Sharks, especially young ones, will prey on African Penguins.

They range in size from the tiny Fairy Penguin ( Eudyptula minor ) at about 1 kg to the very large Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri at about 35 kg (that would be a reasonably large dog). They are excellent underwater swimmers, can capture prey with their well-adapted beaks, and can hold their breath for very long periods of time.
