Similar observation have been made in Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico where up to 47,000 migrating Mississippi Kites are counted every season as they fly south. Cool Green Heron

Photographed in Cuba , the bird appears to be a melanistic Green Heron though it might perhaps be a dark form or even stained by algae.
