While shopping for pet food in 2008, Maryam Faresh and her partner Bruce Meade saw a sign hanging on the wall with a picture of a white puppy with spots and strange looking eyes. The sign read, “Blind and deaf puppy needs home.” Immediately, they went to meet the puppy – within minutes, they knew they had to have her.

Starting with Casey and Arrow, our keepers in the woods, our family would keep cats and dogs. When he went outside to investigate, he saw a dusty troupe of mottled, almost camouflaged, puppies rolling in the sand, all presided over by a serious, sleek, dark presence—their mother. Growing up, we always had animals.

Having run beside many other dogs and handlers before I met the puppy who would become my partner, I knew this kind of collaboration existed, this necessary dialogue. Trainers say that the dogs catch on to the whole process of finding people more quickly than we do. It’s my job to translate her and move all of us closer to a rescue.
