On "Pets" and "Its"

All animals except the dog are called "it" (I did a little experiment to see what would happen). When referring to cats, dogs and horses of unknown sex, the children would randomly assign sex, with the conventionally "prettier" animals being called "she." We do that with cats and dogs already, right?
