Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Fish and Wildlife Service tells states when they may propose a hunting season on cranes, and has ultimate jurisdiction over whether the states get their seasons. There are 400 whooping cranes left in the wild, 100 of them in the eastern population.
