The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. The park was created as much to protect the local communities from marauding elephants with a hatred of dangerous humans and a lack of interest in the differences between nations as it was to protect the elephants. But despite this, I did see birds.

If you see a flock of kestrels in southern Europe, then the chances are that they will be Lessers, for the Common Kestrel never flocks, though occasionally in summer you will see a family hunting together. I have fond memories of watching flocks feeding on the open veld in South Africa, where thousands spend the winter.
