The Ural Owl inhabits old and undisturbed boreal forests, in an unbroken belt from Sweden and Finland across Russia to Japan, and is rarely seen to the south, only here and there, in the Carpathians (Slovakia/Ukraine/Romania/eastern Serbia) and Dinaric Alps (Croatia/Bosnia/western Serbia). The engraved blue leg flag read “M1” and there was also a metal band around the right tarsus, but it is no longer necessary to get that information with the presence of engraved leg flags. We have also observed shorebirds marked in Japan, including a Red-necked Stint marked in Japan last year.

It was only a week later that we discovered our first Terek Sandpiper that had been flagged at Torinumi in Japan. I suddenly observed a Grey-tailed Tattler wearing a metal band on its right tibia and a plain white flag and a blue engraved leg flag on the left tibia.
