By September 2014, there were an estimated 164 Millerbirds on Laysan. Detailed knowledge of the genetic diversity in this species will help inform the effort by analyzing genetic variation in the source population. Over two years (2011 and 2012), scientists captured 50 birds and successfully transported them from Niho to Laysan.
