I always pack binoculars. A Mexican Whip-poor-will welcomed us on our hike up. Kingfisher Birdwatching Nuevo León would provide our guides (and the bird photographs for this post – gracias!). Marilyn and Leonardo picked me up at 4:30 hrs and we drove to our first stop: Pastizales de Santiago. It was amazing.

Only one gave us trouble, partially hidden in the unusually deep snow pack this year, making it difficult to figure out the best place to cross safely. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Standing on the ocean.

On Trinidad, there was no such state involvement in the count, we were pretty much on our own. A box was already set aside for me.

As always, we held our sit high atop Battery Harris at Fort Tilden on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. A pair of flyover American Black Ducks , a flock of Green-winged Teal winging west way out over the ocean, and surprisingly, all three of our expected falcon species were all seen relatively early in the morning.

” In a flash, our small deep sea fishing boat went from casually bobbing on gentle waves to flying over the waters of the Pacific. Shearwaters scattered at our approach and the wind howled in our ears but it couldn’t dampen Wilfredo’s focus, nor his vocal insistence to “follow those birds”!

As the water disappears from the rivers during our winter months in the north the birdlife moves to the remaining pools. We had an overnight stay on our way to Marble Bar last time we went south. Then suddenly we had several Brown Quail nip out of the long grass just in front of our camping table! They head north!

We remained inside our vehicle as ethical observation always is our first priority. Before we got to our destination, I pulled the car over to investigate an almost deafening twittering. To our delight, several hundred Dickcissels were busy feeding in a dry, scorched bamboo grove.

In the early going our best birds were a flyover Dickcissel identified by its characteristic call note and a Great Horned Owl hooting off in the distance, both birds making only their second appearance in the count’s history. One of those birds was new to our cumulative list, a Cape May Warbler !

It also coincided with our 26th anniversary, so we chose to head by train into the Blue Mountains to do some birding for a week and get some exercise on all of the hiking trails. Our decision to pack a thermos flask, which rarely gets used, was the best decision ever! Grant dressed for the weather on Walls Ledge Track.

This male Lion circled our open vehicle alarmingly closely. The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see. But twice during my two week stay we did see the pack, and it was my first ever encounter with the species. But despite this, I did see birds.

A pack of Black Vultures viscously savage a turtle But that is not all they do, they also hunt in packs, overpowering even the largest of the adult Olive Ridley Turtles, to then feast on them slowly. First they start with the eyes; then the tail… a messy business I tell you. Incredible. No birds are evil.

A member of the small Ptiliogonatidae family of silky-flycatchers, of which there are only three other species besides our local Phainopepla , Phainopepl nitens. The silky black plumage of the males almost glowing in the bright sunlight, the striking white wing tips, flashing with each wing beat.
