I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. One would think that for a species as common in Europe as the Grey-headed Woodpecker , the HBW would spend some effort to update the species entry.

This tree is of the coniferous family and this bird has made its life around the southern temperate forest where this tree has been constantly destroyed to clear for farmland development. We did not find any maps for the park but we drove around on narrow dirt roads that crossed park. We stopped often looking and listening for the bird.

Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill.

Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Rufous-winged Woodpecker. This former aberrant wood-warbler is so weird, it has been given its own family. No turkeys up in here, just a big wild and crazy Cracid! In some spots, this amazing bird even visits feeders.
