The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. The scientific species name of the Rusty-naped Pitta oatesi honors Eugene William Oates (1845-1911), an English civil servant in India and naturalist.

Black-winged Stilt near and on the highway There are still over forty species of birds to be found along the highway across Roebuck Plains, but the tall vegetation can be problematic. There are several Swamp Harriers that upset the birds and then you do find there are more species present than are initially visible.

On warmer days I sometimes encountered Australian Magpies “sun-bathing” We have observed several bird species displaying this characteristic of spreading their wings out wide on hot days.

Even in January, the place is hot, humid, smelly (with dead fish being the dominant flavor, though there are also subtle undertones of other rotting things as well as chemicals), cramped, muddy, and full of plastic trash. Anyway, it seems to work reasonably well for the two species I saw here.

Recently, a group of nature photographers were spotted using live fish to bait a family of Grey-headed Fish Eagles in Singapore, where the species is listed as Critically Endangered, with only about 12-18 breeding individuals left in the wild. A Grey-headed Fish Eagle photographed ethically.

In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. Additionally, there are still a few regularly-occurring Pacific pelagic species that I have never seen. My recollection of prior trips is that we used relatively small fishing boats and had 20-25 birders, plus the leaders.

There are quite a few raptor species around Skukuza. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. African Spoonbills seem unfazed by large reptiles. I guess you just get used to them with time.

Here in the Sea of Cortez, we have a fairly decent population of a family of a fish called Tetratdontidae , or more commonly known as Pufferfish. This not only makes them much larger, but in nearly all of the species, allows the sharp barbs, that lay flat along the body, to now stick straight out. Talk about a great defense.
