I am not a big fan of Owls because they require nocturnal searching and it is very difficult to find them. In the three years that I have been birding in this crater I have seen five owls which are Rufous-banded Owl, Andean Pigmy Owl, Great-horned Owl, Barn Owl, and Burrowing Owl.

I waited until now to post about the owl because the small size of the marsh at Plum Beach and the ease with which people can get into the marsh made it likely that if the owl’s location had been publicized it would have faced repeated disturbances from those hoping to see or photograph it. Team Northwest , a group of birders and guides based in Guanacaste and the Fortuna area, collectively found more than 400 species including several key additions for the day. They also heard the expected Bare-shanked Screech-Owl.

The Japanese Scops Owl has the same word in its name ( Otus semitorques ), but I could not find an explanation for that either. The other is the Crested Finchbill. The Latin species name is semitorques , which means something like “half-twisted” – but I have no idea why.

Last Monday, I collected Jamaican Nettletree seeds. I’m not a great imitator of birdcalls, but Pygmy-Owls (both Mountain and Ferruginous ) are easy to imitate, and can draw in all sorts of birds — not just the owls themselves. In this case, the bird that came to investigate was a lovely male Berylline Hummingbird.

We went because Desi, my four-year-old son, wanted to see a Snowy Owl after hearing about and seeing pictures of all of the owls his dad had been seeing this winter. Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded. I had only seen Red Owl once before in flight and here was one nonchalantly perched in a Pandanus! The mythical Red Owl on a day roost at Lake Bemanevika.
