I waited until now to post about the owl because the small size of the marsh at Plum Beach and the ease with which people can get into the marsh made it likely that if the owl’s location had been publicized it would have faced repeated disturbances from those hoping to see or photograph it. How cool is that?

The third in the Nanhui collection of gloriously colored flycatchers is the Blue-and-white Flycatcher. Not surprising then that a pair of Light-vented Bulbuls (photo near the end of this post), when seeing the owl at Nanhui, could not stop complaining about it. It did not seem to bother the owl much though. Oh, the excitement.

Tolkien’s The Hobbit , the cantankerous Tawny Owl ( Strix aluco ) Old Brown from the Peter Rabbit tales by Beatrix Potter, and Kehaar, a Black-headed Gull ( Chroicocephalus ridibundus ) who was one of the few non-leporine characters in Watership Down by Richard Adams. I remember the talking (Song?) It all seemed too fantastical to be true.
