One weekend down for 2015 and only 51 to go. Hope your year is off to a ripping start! I hit Lake Ontario for winter birds this weekend and walked away with a trio of Red-throated Loons. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was an adorable Northern Saw-whet Owl at an undisclosed location in Queens.

Despite the misses, with a 2015 year list of 652, I won’t complain! My other main misses are three owl species I usually see or hear at some point during the year. I guess I just didn’t spend enough nocturnal time in the right places to connect with Spectacled, Crested, and Black-and-white Owls.

Before Saturday Corey had only seen two in Queens ever, one in 2013 and one in 2015. He joined his pal Meryl who spotted a previously reported light morph Rough-legged Hawk as soon as she arrived and then, as they were leaving, she spotted a dark morph Rough-legged Hawk. Seeing one in Queens is impressive but seeing two was mind-blowing!

In October 2015 I shared some photos with you of a Black-breasted Buzzard drinking and bathing on a hot day. One of the distinguishing features of Black-breasted Buzzards are the pale wing panels in flight. Quite often the wing panels almost appear white and the wings are upturned in flight.
