ALDF Provides Grant to Fund Investigation of Animal Abuse

ALDF offers grants for necropsies, DNA testing, and other forensic support nationwide to ensure that local law enforcement is able to collect the necessary evidence to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in cases of criminal animal abuse.

Call me old fashioned if you like, but I rather like many of these old names, as they put a bit of colour and interest into birding, especially if you bother to investigate who exactly the birds are named after. Collecting birds was clearly a dangerous pastime. Wagner wasn’t the only one to have died from gunshot wounds.

Who’s watching whom?

Last Monday, I collected Jamaican Nettletree seeds. In this case, the bird that came to investigate was a lovely male Berylline Hummingbird. Seeds sprout, cuttings root, and apparently moribund plants suddenly produce surprising growth spurts. His reaction was most unusual.

My surprise at reading such a detailed account (I don’t have Klem’s dissertation in front of me, but I’m imagining this is a more personal retelling) was tempered by the thought that Klem wasn’t describing any old research, this was the FIRST research project investigating why birds fly into glass.
