I am checking the grass for any flash of white and soon my suspicion is confirmed: Cattle Egrets (cover photo)! There is a tin fishing hut on stilts and some sort of netting across the lagoon, either to prevent the larger fish getting in, or getting out of it. A few moored boats with piles of fishing nets, but no people.

There were grumpy old fishermen, fishing through the closed season when the fish enter the backwaters to spawn, but also carrying handguns on their belts and assuming that, being armed and dangerous, they have every right to the area. I think that the ponds were already out of use and filled with atmospheric water only.

The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret. The African Fish Eagle was a great first day bird. The best I could do to mix both the birds and the animals was in the picture at the top of this story. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species.

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. Well, the Dusky Eagle-Owl was big too, but for some reason, the Fish-Owl seemed huge. It was a big owl. And this is what we saw.

We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. They perched atop electric poles, on fences, and even on roofs of nearby farm buildings (Point Reyes allows cattle farming), and I soon lost count of how many large raptors we had seen. On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. At the end of the road, we found two Nelson’s Sparrows who quickly flew out to a tiny bit of land in the channel. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day.
