Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. It seemed to be good birding judgement to scan the seasonally flooded wetland in the couple hours of daylight available before the storm arrived.

Blackbirds, as a family, often have those simple descriptive names that are easy to mock ( Yellow-rumped Warbler , ugh) until a non-birder comes describing such a species to you and asking for an ID. It is a bird, and it is indeed black, so that part of the tag is accurate enough. Take Brewer’s Blackbird.

When I photographed a pair a couple of years ago that were sporting radio tags , I assumed (and it may be the case) that they were two birds of twenty tagged that year in Virginia. These birds of prey are being seriously threatened by shootings, poisonings and other attempts to disrupt breeding on grouse moors, probably by gamekeepers on estates. Grouse are a bird species which the hen harriers hunt and their population is also declining. Some say they are a factor in the declining numbers.
