The other day I was exploring a new area for the first time, birding the national park that I’ve watched only in BBC documentaries, the place famous for the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world – more than 1300 pairs! The area is one of the most important in Greece for birds, comprising more than 270 species. The best birding season here is the winter when waterbirds come to overwinter in those lagoons, followed by migratory seasons and, to a lesser extent, breeding season. Whenever we can we go birding on Christmas Day and make a list of the birds that we see. We had already done our Christmas Day bird list and achieved 110 bird species around the Broome area. I normally see Ruddy Ducks on the lake’s deepest waters, and as I said, there are no deep waters in the Lake Cuitzeo right now.

The water level had gone up a little since our last trip, but it is not flowing right across the highway at any point and the pot-holes are slowly being repaired. There are plenty of birds along the edge of the highway still and also on the highway. All three species of Ibis are now present.

This last year of the twenty-teens was a monumental birding year for me. I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. I birded Uganda, which was my first time on the continent of Africa. Such travel brings a lot of birds and the 863 species I saw this year is the most species I have ever seen.

Having finally found a Black Vulture for my Queens list , an important tick both because it was long overdue and because it was the tenth bird since my last set of predictions, it is time, once again, to look at what might be coming to my Queens list. Either way, the odds of actually getting a Brown Pelican in Queens are pretty low.

Common Nightingales were singing, a squadron of Dalmatian Pelicans was in the air and everything was exactly where it should be, including myself. Such seasonal signifiers include but are not limited to incipient blossoms, modest budding, children in shorts, and possibly even some new birds. I dropped in at Montezuma NWR before the errant American White Pelican could pull itself away from the carp-filled canal. Such a tough guy deserves to be Best Bird of the Weekend.

The edges of the highway have started to dry out now and you can get off the bitumen in a few places to take in all of the bird activity. Now we have much cooler overnight temperatures the water level has remained quite constant for a few weeks, but the bird-life is constantly changing.

As you can see there are now areas for birds to land in front of where we camp. The birds never appear concerned about the crocodiles and wander very close to them, especially if there is food in the shallow water. We had several birds drop in right in front of us during the afternoon. Intermediate Egret.

Still, a birder’s gotta bird, so I made sure I would have one morning to check out someplace right there in town. I practiced on these Brown Pelicans. I was rewarded by three birds of prey in rapid succession: A Short-tailed Hawk , a Swainson’s Hawk , and this Zone-tailed Hawk.

The birds around the spot that we camp were very active and typically noisy. Great Egret , White-faced Heron , Little Egret , Black-fronted Dotterel , Black-winged Stilt , Masked Lapwings , Australian Pelican , Common Greenshank , Common Sandpiper , Wood Sandpiper , Grey Teal and a Nankeen Night-heron on dusk after the rain.

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Whimbrel – Undoubtedly this is the easiest bird left for me to find in Queens. Sedge Wren – This is a bird that rarely shows up on the coast in fall migration. Sooty Shearwater – This will take some more dedicated seawatching.

I would wake up in darkness, gather my camera and binoculars and drive to Alabama for a birding tour along a river. Blue Jays called near the boat ramp, and a lone, juvenile Brown Pelican paddled lazily in the lapping waves. There was nothing exciting about my birding as I slowly counted feathered creatures on eBird.

I was itching to get out of the car and bird. My binoculars were on the seat right next to me, so close and yet, so far. Birds were literally everywhere. We had a set-in-stone plan to go scalloping on the nearby seagrass beds, and had to head straight past the birding hotspots to the boat ramp and then out onto the bay.

Definitely my personal favorite of Africa’s pink birds is the delicate Pink-throated Twinspot. Pink-backed Pelican. It is also a fantastic place to watch birds, and to get an introduction to birding in Australia. Right next to the world famous Opera House is the the Sydney Botanical Gardens, a good place to see Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , Banded Rails and large roosting groups of Grey-headed Flying-foxes. The city is a very green one.
