As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. However, it is only a short taxi ride away from the airport where most travelers will arrive at – better to see birds instead of just eating fast food while waiting for a connecting flight.

In common with so many other volcanoes, Poas also houses farms, people, and forests full of birds. Eastern Meadowlarks, cowbirds, grackles , and a few other birds are at peace with the cows but for most birds on Poas, the forest is where life is living large. Oriental Scops Owls are quite possibly my favorite bird at Nanhui. Bird-shaped cuteness. The Relict Gull is listed as vulnerable – apparently, it is one of the scarcest of gulls with a global population estimated at 10,000–20,000 mature individuals and up to 30,000 birds. Estren, a Ph.D. Do you agree? It is beautiful, too.
