The weather in Karratha was very hot during our visit with daytime temperatures of 38c (100f) and the predominant birds in the township were Little Corella , Crested Pigeons and Silver Gulls. Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas.

Redgannet, the blog, has taken a back seat while 10,000 Birds does most of the driving and Mrs Gannet does the navigating, so it has slightly lost its way over the last year or so. Thus it is easy to organise yourself and visit a few sites to catch your target birds. In winter a few ducks are likely.

The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. The autumn migration has clearly started.

Below are a few suggestions of sites within the city that can easily be reached using public transport. It features lakes which can usually be relied upon for Neotropic Cormorant and White-faced Whistling Duck on the water with Kiskadees seemingly perched on every bank-side tree. With luck, you may encounter a Surucua Trogon.

I could paddle on the water trail because I not only owned a kayak, but also because I owned a car that could get me to the park – far away from public transportation.

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing.
