Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. The grass is green, the wildflowers are spectacular and now we have numerous species of dragonfly to enjoy as the season starts to change.

I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). The Little Grebe is of course a very common bird that can still surprise by its beauty in its breeding plumage.

And apart from local people, primate researchers sometimes spot it, but it is a species seen by fewer than ten living birders. The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).

The raising of these young chicks is not over yet! We are really enjoying the experience of observing another bird species that is black, white and red breed in our local patch. Of course the Pied Oystercatchers are also breeding at this time of year and we continue to monitor their progress along our coastline.

It was one of these species, the Victoria’s Riflebird , that I was lucky enough to see this year in the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns.

Once again Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is fast approaching in Broome and we can expect the first batch of eggs to be laid within the next few weeks. Due to the longevity of this species it appears that they are able to maintain their population. They do not react to Lesser Frigatebirds when they are in pairs and breeding.

When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. It is a very easy species to find in the Broome area and present throughout the year. The closest similar species is the Banded Stilt , but it is a stockier bird with shorter legs.

I soon found the pair of Pied Oystercatchers that I was looking for and they had two failed attempts at breeding this year. They have only once successfully raise a chick on Cable Beach in the territory they have chosen and that was incredible to follow the fast progress of a small feathery bundle to a flying juvenile. It returns to Broome with a mottled breeding plumage pattern and gradually changes its moult during its stay. This past breeding season the pair that inhabit this area of reef successfully raised three young birds and the last chick finally left its parents at the end of 2014 and they now have the area to themselves once again.

Since discovering our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 we have observed the breeding of these local shorebirds along the coast between Gantheaume Point in the south and Willie Creek in the north, which is a distance of 23 kilometres. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

As the tide dropped the Black-winged Stilt settled themselves on the wet sand close to some other Australian Pelicans and gives you some idea of the relative size of the two species. Last year they successfully raised three chicks to be independant and leave to find a non-breeding flock until they find a mate.

Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. A short walk found us both species despite the tide being rather low. Our next plan was to head out of town because it was midday and we had 72 species within the town limit. Common Sandpiper.

Not all of our shorebird species migrate and those that reside here are also currently sitting on eggs, or thinking about laying eggs in the upcoming weeks. Pied Oystercatchers nest along our coastline from late June and they will continue to attempt to raise chicks over the following months.
