Following an exceptionally wet start to the year we are getting used to finding bird species around Broome that we do not encounter every year. We both immediately raised our binoculars to our eyes and realised it was a Crimson Chat actively feeding along the fence and nipping in and out as it fed.

The raising of these young chicks is not over yet! We are really enjoying the experience of observing another bird species that is black, white and red breed in our local patch. When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. It is a very easy species to find in the Broome area and present throughout the year. The closest similar species is the Banded Stilt , but it is a stockier bird with shorter legs.

But names aren’t everything and there is plenty to say about this species. The latter two species are flightless, but the Brown Teal is flighted and in the old days used to locally migrate in large numbers to winter roosting areas. This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation. We have never had a pair succeed in raising all of their chicks and even to succeed in raising one takes a lot of effort because they are so dependent on their parents.

Due to the longevity of this species it appears that they are able to maintain their population. Further to the south the birds move into Roebuck Bay or to the reef at the far end of Cable Beach, where they raise their chick. They have only once successfully raise a chick on Cable Beach in the territory they have chosen and that was incredible to follow the fast progress of a small feathery bundle to a flying juvenile. They don’t usually maintain their territory outside of breeding season and they have never successfully raised a chick yet.

Walking down from the top car-park on October 5th we soon joined the wide trail and had the option to go to the right to the hide that was raised very high overlooking the ponds or go to the left towards the ponds. These reeds were an excellent place to observe Bearded Reedlings , though and a bird species that people come to the area to see.

There are numerous bird species that we only observe when we are many miles from home and some bird species we have rarely observed. Whilst observing the Southern Emu-wrens a White-fronted Chat flew into view and landed on some raised vegetation! Two new birds for 2019 just like that!

This past breeding season the pair that inhabit this area of reef successfully raised three young birds and the last chick finally left its parents at the end of 2014 and they now have the area to themselves once again. We have several of the cuckoo species around the Broome area and all cuckoos are more likely to be heard than seen, but every now and again you get lucky! Pheasant Coucals are also a member of the cuckoo family, but are unique because they do actually raise their own young. At 28-33cm they are one of the larger cuckoos. Pallid Cuckoo.

This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

The grass is green, the wildflowers are spectacular and now we have numerous species of dragonfly to enjoy as the season starts to change. This is typical behaviour for this species and the partner was soon on the scene right beside the car also being very vocal and displaying aggression in the general direction of the car.

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. Thankfully with the longevity of this species it appears the population is fairly stable, but this may not always be the case if predation continues at the rate that it is. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).
