This is the time of year when the Pied Oystercatchers breed and already three of the sixteen pairs along this stretch of beach have successfully laid eggs. I made one brief trip to the nest site to get a GPS reading to be reported to Birds Australia Nest Record Scheme and then the parent returned to the nest.

The variety of shorebirds varies throughout the year, but the Pied Oystercatchers and Red-capped Plovers remain when the other shorebirds migrate to the north and they breed along Cable Beach. The sunsets in Broome are especially good when there are clouds about and we experience them around 5:30pm in winter and 6:30pm in summer.

From our experience the greatest risk is when the shorebirds take off in a panic flight and clip each other’s wings and several fall into the sea. Most of the Red Knot are in very good breeding plumage now and they do stand out very well on the grey rocks.

It has been twelve weeks now since the first pair of Pied Oystercatchers attempted to breed along the stretch of beach that we survey and as with each year there have been setbacks. There was a long stretch of beach that did not have a breeding pair, but it was in amongst the vehicles and nudists that frequent the area at this time of year.

They breed year round and the single young remain in the pouch for about 30 weeks and become independent after a year. We spend quite a lot of time observing shorebirds in Broome and recently had a great experience where an Agile Wallaby hopped out of the bush at about 4pm and went straight into a flock of shorebirds to get to the sea.

Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. There was evidence of terns breeding at some earlier stage by the remaining carcasses in the bush.
