It originally served as the port of entry for goods brought from Asia by Spanish galleons. And the birds along the walk to the estuary weren’t bad, either: Looks like nesting time has arrived for this Golden-cheeked Woodpecker. They even seemed to enjoy going along for the ride. Ditto for this handsome Amazon Kingfisher.

Fine, my best bird was a White-backed Woodpecker , alright? … New Zealand has a host of hedgehogs but they are introduced. The most familiar hedgehog to Americans is probably the European Hedgehog E.

The Nuthatch , which only visiting birders refer to as an Eurasian Nuthatch , is found throughout temperate Europe and Asia from Portugal to Japan. Most of the photos in this post are of a single bird in an orchard that was very cooperative when we were hoping to find Syrian Woodpeckers. Nuthatches are all very similar.

Elliot’s Laughingthrush is named after Daniel Giraud Elliot (1835 – 1915), an American ornithologist who apparently did not really do anything related to laughingthrushes and/or Asia but was rich. Maybe that was enough. At least he did not have a book titled “The Art of the Deal” ghostwritten for him. What a bummer.

The Chestnut-winged Babbler is known as one of the host species of the Asian Drongo-cuckoo in Southeast Asia ( source ), a claim to fame that most bird species would probably prefer to avoid. Sepilok is a good place to see a number of woodpecker species. Makes them sort of the renters of the woodpecker world rather than homeowners.

There is a Linnet at Kissena Corridor Park in Queens, and though I bird this park regularly, the Linnet, a bird regularly found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa and also named in a sweet song by Stephen Sondheim (Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeny Todd) has eluded me. I needed a book showing a Linnet. A miscellaneous pot indeed!

Contrast this in Asia to, say, Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok, all of which have great birding nearby but are destinations people go to for reasons other than wildlife. The Speckled Piculet is a budget version of a woodpecker, measuring only about 9 to 10.5 eBird describes the Speckled Piculet as a “tiny” woodpecker while Marco Rubio once stated that Donald Trump has “small hands” The photo below presumably shows a male bird given its rufous-orange to yellow forehead.
