Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Whimbrel – Undoubtedly this is the easiest bird left for me to find in Queens. Sedge Wren – This is a bird that rarely shows up on the coast in fall migration. Sooty Shearwater – This will take some more dedicated seawatching.

Summer birding gets a bad rap, especially around here, but July offers one highlight. I saw a few shorebirds myself this weekend, but was more amused by a House Sparrow. I tracked the call to an obstructed corner of the room and encouraged the kids to tune out the endless plaintive cry of what I guessed to be a juvenile House Sparrow.

It is in this habitat that birders seek out goodies like Red-cockaded Woodpecker and Bachmann’s Sparrow. In 2012 I was successful, with the help of Doug Gochfeld, in finding all of those species in and around Three Lakes , and I hoped for a repeat performance but with better views of Bachmann’s Sparrow. My best bird of the weekend was Western Wood-Pewee … actually, no, that was Nate’s best bird for reasons that may never be adequately explained. Corey’s best bird of the weekend was a Lark Sparrow , highly unusual at his current coordinates. Bad picture of a great bird… Elegant Trogon !!

In 2007 I was working in a university building that was just begging for bird feeders. This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. My latest addition, a Parasitic Jaeger off the coast, finally got me to my 289th bird, well over a year since I got my 279th. The first time I did this I accidentally added twelve birds to my list before reviewing it. I must do better!

Twitching is a British term used to mean “the pursuit of a previously located rare bird.” Basically, I never had the time to chase birds. My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count.

Today the interests of tourists are met by an artificial sea pool near the city centre, and the muddy beach is left mostly for the birds. But the birds here seem utterly habituated to it. Dawn of 2012 from the beach at Cairns Esplanade. Swimming in this part of the world is a bad idea. These guys could eat alligators for lunch.
