World Sparrow Day is celebrated annually on March 20th to raise awareness across the globe about the decline of the House Sparrow and how it impacts all of us.

New York City Park Department Contractor Tears Up Imperiled Sparrows Home

Joshua Malbin has been birding in Brooklyn, NY for more than 10 of his 15-plus years doing it so far. A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.” Not anymore.

eBird Trip Reports

I have found Trip Reports a useful way to organize checklists from birding trips. Both states were new to me in terms of eBird, so I had never visited Bombay Hook NWR , which made my list of the Top 25 NWRs for Birding. Two of those birds were lifers ( Worm-eating Warbler and Grasshopper Sparrow ). were new to me.

I did not find much about this bird online except for a paper with the exciting title “A new quill mite Torotrogla emberizae sp. Given that this bird moves very fast and thus leads to bird photographers spending a lot of time getting mostly completely unusable photos, I think the parasitism is well-deserved.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of September 2012)

My best bird this weekend was a spry little Red-breasted Nuthatch consorting with its larger White-breasted kin. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was his only year bird that crossed his path, a nice Clay-colored Sparrow at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. What was your best bird of the weekend? How about you?
