Certain kinds of birds, such as finches and Snowy Owls , may go for years without travelling outside of their normal ranges. Indeed, it was not recorded on eBird in Morelia before 2010, but has been reported all over the city and surrounding area since then. The Hook-billed Kite is a wonderful bird. Many years I see none.

I know I will be doing my best to make it so, especially from a birding perspective. I’ll bird my butt off and see what happens… I will add at least three new birds to my Queens list. Seawatching, searching out birds in migration both spring and fall, and hoping for rarities is really all I can do. Who knows?

Few experiences birding get me more excited than adding a new bird to my Queens list. My latest addition, a Parasitic Jaeger off the coast, finally got me to my 289th bird, well over a year since I got my 279th. The first time I did this I accidentally added twelve birds to my list before reviewing it.

Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 21st of March, meaning that this bird was a full nine days earlier than average and beat last year’s first phoebe by six days. Early first phoebe of the year is good but the predicted nor’easter might make it tough for early arriving birds to survive. 2012 – 15 March.

Podicipediformes, aka Grebes, are freshwater diving duckish birds that are not ducks. That of course is true of many birds.) Like many birds, Grebes are mainly preyed on by other birds, but also, because Grebes liv in and on and near (mostly) fresh water, they are also preyed on by the smaller carnivores such as ferrets.

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. We have continued to monitor the nest sites and the pairs of Pied Oystercatchers over the past few months and the birds are really having a tough year this year. There was only one that survived to fledge in 2010, two in 2011 and two in 2012. One of the surviving Pied Oystercatcher chicks in 2012 made itself famous right here.

Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Whimbrel – Undoubtedly this is the easiest bird left for me to find in Queens. Sedge Wren – This is a bird that rarely shows up on the coast in fall migration. Sooty Shearwater – This will take some more dedicated seawatching.

Some time after the Spanish encounter with the Turkey, birds were brought back to Europe where they were raised and became an important source of food and fancy feathers. Richard totaled 352 species, an impressive number, by seeing almost all of the regularly occurring New York birds and the vast majority of the rarities that showed up in 2011. It actually makes a lot of sense, the geographic features of the isthmus between North America (including Mexico, because Mexico is part of North America) and South America cut across political lines, as do birds. A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. If such a trend continues, we will lose these animals for good!
