Brush-tailed Possums were brought from Australia to help start a fur industry. Possums still strip our native forests, ferrets and stoats and possums still devastate our native birds. Gamebirds, such as turkeys, pheasants, partridges, quail, Mallards and the like were also brought, as were popular sport fish.

Even wiping out one species, like possums, or stoats, or hedgehogs is probably beyond current methods. Even wiping out a majority of mammals from the third biggest island is a challenge, and not just logistically. We are certainly many years away from being able to undertake a feat of that magnitude on one of the two main islands.

Usually possums this small are with their mothers. Birds, possums, same problem. It was chewing on the remains of a little bird that had fallen out of its nest. It was right on the curb and I was concerned about it getting run over. My son and I put it in a box and took it to a ditch area behind our house. We took positive action.

We do have a possum and a raccoon that live somewhere on the property. I have never once seen a cat anywhere in my neighborhood. or even this city for that matter. None of my neighbors have cats and I'm only aware of one dog owner blocks away. And I have found one small dead garden snake in the street.

The highlight of the night was a Striped Possum, a large squirrel sized possum with black and white striped fur. Most of these were easy enough to find on later dates,along with the smaller native Bush Rats, but I only saw one Striped Possum. There were also massive native White-tailed Rats and the Northern Brown Bandicoot.
