According to the data the authors gathered from banded and recovered Blue Jays , the species shows both a northward post-breeding dispersal (which we’re probably seeing right now, in September) and a southward migration. Some stop as short as Pennsylvania. That last bit is my own interpretation of the data.)

The trap had been set in the woods right next to my house. This unlucky/lucky young Red-tailed Hawk was found and taken to Red Creek Wildlife Care in Pennsylvania. The name and town of the owner were engraved on a metal tag. I went home, called the Department of Environmental Conservation, and voiced my outrage. I knew the wildlife.

The Water Ouzel (American Dipper) family was easily found and after spending some real quality time with them I continued hiking the trail around Manzanita Lake where I met a couple who were visiting from Pennsylvania. As I began photographing that bird, I heard the high pitched squeaking of another creeper right behind me.

It was that way for my first Indigo Bunting (a male that absorbed all light and sang in morning wet forests of northeastern Pennsylvania in 1979), and my first Brown Noddy seen from a ferry in Costa Rica earlier this year. The most likely culprit is the El Nino effect happening right now in the eastern Pacific.

We let a one-eyed Bald Eagle go after a year of battling state officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. I held him a minute so he could look around, then I slowly opened my hands and after a few seconds he flew off and went right to a tree trunk and started acting like a wild woodpecker. So gorgeous!

There’s Hawk Mountain, Pennsylvania, of course, and that little known Cape May place in New Jersey, not to mention others like Fort Smallwood in Maryland and even Fort Tilden in Queens, New York, which gets some press on the occasions that Corey swings by. Hawkwatches on the northern half of the Appalachians get a lot of press.

They take the form of a White-winged Tern that got lost somewhere over the Atlantic and ended up in Pennsylvania. In fact, right now, in all likelihood, there probably are a few Aplomados up that way hunting in some far off fields never visited by birders. As the Newsweek story indicates, 38 states have passed laws giving women the right to breastfeed in any public or private place she’d otherwise be allowed to be. One effective way of doing that is to boycott businesses that interfere with a woman's right to breastfeed her child. The legislators in these 12 states ought to be ashamed.
