Highlights from the 2022 Arenal Christmas Count in Costa Rica

It was weird to position ourselves with the sun behind our backs so we could get better looks at dozens of low flying swifts. Those species would be: Violaceous Quail-Dove seen by our team, photo by Nancy Stevick. The swift action was also excellent, at least on our route. All possible quail-doves were found.

Back from the Second Birding Rally Challenge in Northern Peru

The Birding Rally Challenge consisted of multiple segments where six teams birded from dawn until dark. Teams received the wakeup call at 4:00 AM and were expected to turn in the day’s checklist by 8:00 PM. Most members of this team are associated with Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s E-Bird initiative.

Participating in My First “Normal” Birdathon

In 2020, our Birdathon efforts came in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, when lockdowns and restrictions remained common. To make sure our staff, volunteers, and members stayed safe, we asked birders to stick to their backyards, and we aggregated tallies across groups: staff vs. members.
