Stop the Tennessee Sandhill Crane Hunt! (Again)

Yes, the earth has gone around the sun twice since the uproar from birders and other lovers of wildlife managed to convince the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to table the idea of hunting Sandhill Cranes in Tennessee for two years. Cancel the 17-year-old annual festival, and propose a hunting season on cranes. It’s bad PR.

Bird Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Avian Lives–A Book Review

The idea is to portray one bird for each hour of the day in words and art, presenting the diversity, beauty, and wonder of avian life. Hauber is really good at presenting scientific findings so they don’t seem scientific at all, simply reasonable answers to our questions. Bird Day is a lovely, little jewel of a book.

Forest Bathing

Now that I have driven that to a state of relative completion and I am compelled to return to the forest, I learned that the government here has re-opened the hunting season. After experiencing the ebb and flow of energies over the years with the coming and going of the annual five month long hunting season, the strain is plain for me to see.

I believe there were also a pair of Hammond’s Flycatchers present on that outing, but can one ever be sure with the Empidonax Flycatchers ? I’m no expert, but I strongly suspect Rusty Sparrows only hunt for grubs when they are feeding babies. These were all nice harbingers of things to come.

Swifts are aplenty, one is likely to see Gray-rumped , Band-rumped , or Short-tailed Swift hunting insects each morning. Tufted Coquette Arriving here during the hours of darkness presents its own cadre of obstacles, however. To get around this, I either leave the afternoon free – or check in during the night.

It is estimated that tens of thousands of shorebirds continue to be taken annually by hunting clubs on just these three islands. This practice is a throwback to more than a century ago when gunners hunted shorebirds throughout the Americas. Shorebird hunting within these areas continues to be unregulated to the present time.

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. Three of them in fact, rare visitors from the north. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter.
