For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

Some remained stored for decades before a researcher would pick them up and inquired about these poorly documented specimens. These conditions offered easy access to hunters in a habitat where a bird as large as a Guan would have little chances to hide or scape. It is depressing and angering and just wrong.

Seals and Whales are also given a lot of attention, with entries organized similarly to the bird species accounts. Over 3 million pairs of Antarctic Fur Seals breed on South Georgia, saved from near extinction by fur hunters. Southern Elephant Seals and Weddell Seals are also resident, though not in such large numbers.
