The “Turkeys” of Costa Rica

In other words, millions of people got together with family and friends for a cozy day of mashed potatoes, gravy, apple pie, naps, football, and some serious turkeyliciousness. That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! Our final turkey is a much-wanted bird on many a birder’s target list.

Cyprus Delights – Part III

I have encountered a few of the more quirky members of the family, including the brilliant and aptly-named African Emerald Cuckoo, India’s ultra-shy Sirkeer Malkoha, and the fascinating Lesser Ground Cuckoo in Costa Rica. It reminded me of a Roadrunner, which is, of course, also a member of the cuckoo family.

Then we detoured into the center of Villahermosa, to see the Northern Potoo that spends each day in the garden of one of Rolando’s family members. Much more surprising, however, is that freshwater snails are also the preferred food for a local member of the hawk family. This was a lifer I had long hoped for! Go figure!

I’m traveling down to NYC for some family fun, just as Corey is vacating the city for parts north. Plus, birding is never all that popular in these parts. I was so crippled with envy over Corey’s current Neotropical sojourn (with a few family commitments thrown in) that I could barely bring myself to look at birds at all. However, I did spot a curious assemblage of House Sparrows perched in a row along the roofline of one specific house. How about you?

A Most Unexpected Encounter

Two other countries we visited, Morocco and Turkey, have recently experienced catastrophic earthquakes. The addition of a family of Least Grebes was a nice touch. Some of this tourism occurred because we were supposed to visit Jordan, but recent geopolitical events have made Americans rather unwelcome in that corner of the world.
