I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting. Why the weasel should be the head of the family doesn’t really make sense.

Woodpeckers and Woodcreepers of Tobago

The exploration of triads within the avifauna of Trinidad and Tobago has taken me through various families and species groups on this blog. This Cocoa Woodcreeper was hunting for a meal around a fallen tree and thankfully was eye level long enough for me to get a decent photo showing off its enchanting facial patterns.

Like all members of the Nightjar family, the Buff-collared Nightjar hunts for insects on the wing, at night, and rests immobile during the day, protected by its subtle camouflage.
