The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes. They are also hunted. They roost and hunt, at night (mostly) when we can’t see them. In some ways, this is a puzzling chapter. This is a great summer read.

Independence Day weekend saw the family and me visiting my folks in New York’s Hudson Valley, in Saugerties to be exact. It was clearly a good year for swallow reproduction at the vly as family groups gathered on overhead wires and dead snags and the sheer volume of swallows was pretty impressive for a non-migratory gathering.

When we were at an amazing rock formation, called the Olgas, or Kata-Tjutas as the locals call them, this Nankeen Kestrel hunted all around me for well over 30 minutes before drifting away in search of better hunting grounds. Sure enough, and group of 8 camels was not to far off the road, about 35 kilometers from Yulara.

While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe. It’s actually a pretty classic example of convergent evolution, wherein two unrelated families of lifeforms evolve to fill the same niche independently.
