For the past several years I have been taking advantage of our many National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) here in Northern California. This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012. This was a no-brainer. I found it within 30 minutes.

Steve travels to Namibia, a land of rolling dunes, sand and plenty of dangerous wildlife. Steve dons a camouflage suit for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that gets him closer to a wild leopard than he ever hoped. Although small, the Tokay has tiny hairs on its toes that allow it to grip to surfaces, making for a quick climber.

Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. Either way, it was a heck of a sight and another example of why Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best place in New York City to see amazing wildlife spectacles.

Growing up in central Oregon, allowed me to experience such a diverse amount of habitat, and the wildlife that resides there. The combination of over hunting, and the native animals susceptibility to diseases carried by domestic livestock that were allowed to graze there, completely eliminated these Bighorns by 1915.

Later, Harry Fuller, President of the Klamath Bird Observatory, led us to an open meadow where we saw a pair of Great Gray Owls hunting in a meadow. Finally, the Similan Islands are perhaps one of the most beautiful islands in the world and form a stunning backdrop to this species, one of the loveliest pigeons in the world.

New England Reptile Distributers just released a video explaining a terrible incident involving the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). He had a legal permit to own them (Conditional Species Permit), and had legally microchipped them according to FWC guidelines.

I new him because we enlisted his Dryfus Lion and one of his tigers to carry out experiments with bones (this is something archaeologists do). Also, feral Cats on islands seem to be a serious problem, causing the extirpation of some indigenous species. That was one of his cats. He also had tigers, cougars, and some other animals.

My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. On my first visit to the island a few years ago I even found one hunting for sandhoppers and other assorted treats in the washed up seaweed on the beach.
