Some Hokkaido Winter Passerines

Given how far Hokkaido is from Europe, it seems a bit surprising how many bird species wintering on this Japanese island have a name starting with “Eurasian” Or how many of these species I have also seen in my parents’ garden in Germany. In science speak, this is named the optimal body mass hypothesis.

We had a Christmas Bird Count

Three are biology students, one is an elementary-school science teacher, and I am a birding, well, fanatic. There was plenty of passion and humility to go around, and it was a great experience. This being our winter season, the most interesting species for most of us were the northerly and migratory ones. Not a Snowy Egret.
