10,000 Birds

One of the interesting aspects of Trinidad’s nature is that both southern corners of the roughly boot-shaped island are dotted with wetlands. Some weeks ago, I elaborated on some of my experiences on the eastern and southeastern ends. Recently we took a more social drive to the opposite southern corner, to the very end of the island where the ocean is gradually reclaiming land, road and all.

The popstars are back: Paradise Flycatchers in Shanghai

10,000 Birds

Such an embarrassingly populist title of a blog post should obviously be followed by some dry facts. Here goes: Paradise Flycatchers are a genus in the broader (and rather large) family of Monarchidae. There are 17 different species of them, a few of them endangered, particularly some island endemics. While most of them are non-migratory, the two that visit Shanghai are migratory: the Amur Paradise Flycatcher and the Japanese Paradise Flycatcher.

My hamster won’t burrow now after being startled

Reddit Animals

My hamster was asleep in his burrow and I accidentally knocked one of my metal bed frame posts over as I was packing and it made a decent loud bang on the floor. He shot out of his burrow and was very jumpy for a bit. He loosened up, ran on his wheel, ate some food but won’t go back into his burrow. Is there anything I can do?

Would I hear if there was a bat in the house?

Reddit Animals

Not sure if this is the right subreddit to post in, I apologize. Last night I was jolted awake out of a dream in the middle of the night and thought I saw what looked to be a bat crawling up my door. I stepped out of the room. Then went back in. I looked everywhere and I didn’t see anything. I checked practically the whole house and no sign of bats.

Learning more?

Reddit Animals

Hi everyone. This may be a bit of an odd question that most people may have the answer to but I will ask anyway. I’ve been really into watching national geographic and YouTube videos from channels like urban rescue ranch and brave wilderness etc. I would specifically want advice on what sites to go on or maybe even which videos or movies I can watch that can teach me more about animals.

Battle with a salamander ?

Reddit Animals

So I’ve been having what I thought was a battle with a prairie dog with a hole under my front walkway. I’d put rocks to block the hole. The next day they would be gone. For weeks this has been happening. Well I got home after work. Turns out it’s a salamander. I thought they stayed closer to water. Kind of confused why he has made a home under my front walkway.

Someone told me how to make cabbits could it be true?

So I don't know if this is true but someone told me him and his friend used to breed cabbits by getting a cat pregnant by another cat because "they're most fertile after they're already pregnant" and putting it in a cage with a male rabbit, could this be possible/true?

Bird fell down on the street

Reddit Animals

This bird fell down on the street and we quickly picked him up, he was almost being ran over, it was really so close. It looked like he was in a shock and his right leg was hurt. When I picked him up, he couldn‘t really fly and acted really weird. We took him with us and after some minutes he could stand on both feet, but I don‘t know if he can fly.

How do I help this Sparrow

Reddit Animals

Found what seems to be a fledgling sparrow, and I know you aren’t meant to move them, however the place it was at happened to be where my dog is and where stray cats seem to sneak through. We put the bird in a box with water and applesauce but we understood that the mother was likely looking for it so we left him out with the box open on our porch, close enough to where it landed but out of reach from my dog.
