Learning the Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Although Henslow’s had been reliably found in nearby Sharon Springs for many years, the last documented sighting was in 2008, and the sighting startled longtime birders, waking them up to the fact that breeding sites in the state were rapidly being lost. In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y.,

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of January 2021)

10,000 Birds

The picture above is horrible but it kind of documents that Corey saw a state first this weekend which makes it obviously his Best Bird of the Weekend. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment. How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend?

The Fallen Yellowlegs

10,000 Birds

Birding the Drakensberg, South Africa

10,000 Birds

After my Przevalski experience, I now look up such names to check whether the person the bird is named after has made similar racist statements, or even done worse things. No photoshop was needed to document this bizarre creature encountered somewhere along the road. Gurney’s Sugarbird is not a name I made up. On the ground?

Montezuma Winery: Carbonated Rhubarb Wine

10,000 Birds

My only previous experience with the Montezuma Winery – as documented here – was a bottle of their Red Wing, a red wine made from the Catawba grape, an often-unruly American variety. Before getting back on the Thruway, we stopped at the Montezuma Winery in nearby Seneca Falls, just down the road from the Montezuma visitor center.
