In a few weeks’ time they will be into their breeding season and there will be a moment of close contact. When we got tired of walking around, flowering hedges gave us views of several hummingbirds including Purple-throated Mountain-gem (a typical species of Costa Rican cloud forest), and the decidedly less common Magenta-throated Woodstar. He always knows where the quetzals are and if the Three-wattled Bellbirds are around!

The last week found us start off in Hull, at the Spurn Bird Observatory. We had contacted the staff at the observatory, and with Jonnies help, arranged to stay right there in their newly built hostel type facility. We spoke softly to reassure him and he allowed us to approach quite closely. Bobwhites have vocalisations that distinguish between aeriel predators and ground predators as well as contact calls to keep tabs on the rest of the covey. The soft kichoo that we actually heard ( pitoo , Sibley) was a contact call.

The wind was strong and the cold air kept us from exploring too far but we managed some great views of Puna Teal, Crested Duck, Giant Coot, and Lake Duck.
