I do not claim to have the answer, but I think it is certainly worthwhile to raise the question: Why, exactly, all over the civilized world, in virtually every major city, are apes in prison? .*

In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ). Though to be historically accurate, the breaking wheel would be a better comparison. Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study).

Blue-winged x Green-winged hybrids seem to be slightly more common (I have seen pictures of 12 different birds of this combination) and Blue-winged x Cinnamon Teal very common in comparison (I know pictures of at least 75 different hybrids of this combination.) Are you willing to hazard a guess about its lineage?

I will admit that there are legitimate concerns that have been raised about falconry – birds that are not native to an area sometimes escape and become feral; humans should minimize their influence on nature. But what really strikes me is the smell – fresh, clean and without comparison.

Look at the Swallow page shown in the beginning of this review: there is a comparison of Barn Swallow and Cliff Swallow nests; silhouettes of a Barn Swallow in flight; a skeleton of a Barn Swallow, bones stronger and stiffer than humans but not, surprisingly, heavier.

Another question this raises has to do with migration itself. The authors examine migration related traits and address the theoretical problems of massive comparisons across large numbers of physical features and behaviors across many species. Those two questions are not mutually exclusive. Why migrate?
