The Yellowthroat group is an odd collection of bird species. The Bahama Yellowthroat lives, well, on a collection of Bahaman islands. I live right in the middle of this species’ range, and have seen it ten times so far. Both are marsh-dwelling species. See the difference? Neither do I!

Global Big Day has become an annual collective event in May that encourages thousands of people to watch birds on the same date. Pre-dawn birding for us on October 8 gave four owl species, a Common Potoo (not so common), and then a host of species right at and just after dawn.

Collared Aracaris are weird for toucans in that they often travel in groups unlike other toucan species which are in general likely to be seen in ones or twos. In addition to the serrated bill, Collared Aracaris have a barbed tongue, which you can see in the bird on the right. I don’t think they miss, ever. Disturbing, no?

More curious was the owlet-nightjar, an already obscure group to begin with, but made all the more astonishing by virtue of its flightless and ground living lifestyle.

Tree branches for the fires are collected for weeks ahead of the festival. The tradition is under threat from animal rights groups, who say the horses suffer as they leap over the flames. The flames are regularly doused with water to produce columns of smoke intended to purify the animals.

Puffbacks belong to the bush-shrike family Malaconotidae and this group are called puffbacks due to several of the species forming a habit of puffing out their fluffy white back feathers during display. This is rather a difficult bird to photograph as its a denizen of the canopy and sub-canopy of Africa’s rainforests. Pink-throated Longclaw.
