Kings County Brewers Collective: Safe Flight IPA

This was the first Albany County report since 1979 and as I hadn’t even been born when that happened, I raced up there right way. I immediately noticed the shop was selling Safe Flight IPA by Kings County Brewers Collective, a beer I desperately wanted to review for Birds and Booze last year but couldn’t find for sale anywhere in Albany.

This photo, which was shared on a local birders’ WhatsApp group, shows the enormous extension of burning reedbeds on that very windy day. And this remnant lake is very, very birdy: The dominant birds, besides those American White Pelicans seen at the right, were Northern Shovelers — hundreds of them.

From the border check station, you can turn to the right and go to the “Highest Bar in Africa” or continue into the unknown. In one stretch of rocky outcropping, a group of Ground Woodpeckers foraged along boulders searching for ants and as their name suggests, they forage on the ground in sparsely vegetated country.

There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.) At the Pacuare river bank there was a group of rafters getting ready to tackle the noisy waves.
