I was surprised that this species is named for its vocalization – which sounds like laughter. For example, the Diamond Dove is the world’s second-smallest species of the columbidae order ( source ). The Latin species name haematonotus (“blood-backed”) sounds a bit more exciting but not necessarily more accurate.

Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. According to the HBW, based on strong morphological, ecological, and genetic differences, this is likely to be a distinct species altogether. I always feel a bit sad for bird species that probably cannot even pronounce their own names.

Similarly, descriptions of species repeated across volumes do not lose their accuracy with each publication. Other species are splits and lumped and have had their names changed. The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). My NRLI fellowship class zipped across the Rodman Reservoir in two air boats, avoiding the submerged tree trunks leftover from the bottomland forest that once grew here. My mom and I were visiting the gardens while we waited for my brother to get out of his classes at UC Berkeley. It’s no surprise we confused Winter and Pacific Wrens; until 2010, they were considered the same species! In fact, the Winter Wren was split into three species: the Winter Wren, the Pacific Wren, and the Eurasian Wren.

Designated in 1967 (36 years after Idaho’s), the Mountain Bluebird can be found all year round in Nevada, though in general its range shift southward for the winter months; in the summer, this species can be found as far north as Alaska. They let schoolchildren vote too, which must have been a fun class exercise!
