Well, as it turns out neither a trip to a slaughterhouse nor killing an animal yourself is powerful enough to make people go vegan. The bottom line is that there are many reasons why human-animal interactions are so often inconsistent and paradoxical. He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal.

It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. If you don't have to enslave, rape, dominate, or kill someone (or have someone else do it for you), why would you? No one will propose a ban on eating chickens because there's no conflict there. Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. No one needs to eat sentient beings, so it's not as if these "farmers" are providing a valuable service to humanity. I wouldn't do it to a dog, and I shouldn't do it to a chicken/sheep/cow/pig.

I did tweet about " Scientists Say Dolphins Should Be Treated As 'Non-human Persons' " yesterday, as I think this is a Gray Matter for a lot of people and might be interesting to explore. Dolphins are so smart that scientists think they should be treated as "non-human persons" and as such it is "morally unacceptable" to use or kill them.

We encourage kids to gently pet baby lambs, cows, chickens and pigs, but we deny them this loving connection when we serve animals for dinner by surreptitiously calling them chops, hamburger, nuggets and bacon. There is no happy ending for even the most humanely raised animal. More and more people do not. We call ourselves vegetarians.
