Protecting Your Pets from Pests and Disease
Heartworms are easily controlled by any one of a number of medications designed to kill the worms or repel mosquitoes. Because the illness is mosquito-borne, the best way to avoid it is to kill the insects with something like a Mosquito Magnet or a product with DEET before the mosquitoes have an opportunity to pass on the virus.

Why Do Animals Exist?
They exist to be pigs and cows and chickens and zebras and elephants. They also tried to tell me that veganism is no better because of all the animals that are killed in the process of harvesting vegetables and grains. This weekend I got into a rather passionate debate with some friends of friends about animal rights. eaten by them?

On The Respectful Emperor
When I think about the language that has been used by people who kill animals or have someone else do it for them, a couple of years ago the "compassionate" trend began. Maybe "humane" is already on its way out for the folks trying to convince themselves and others that humane killing isn't an oxymoron. People are talking. And acting.

Are Farm Animals Usually Killed in a Humane Manner?
He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. The eventual kill is quick, clean, and painless. Here is my opinion. AND 2. big corporate agribusiness.)

Animal Advocates' Successes Have Factory Farmers Running Scared
There is no ethical justification for killing an animal for no good reason. For example, "free roaming chickens" conjures up images of happy chickens running free and unfettered all about the barnyard, when in fact the label "free roaming chickens" just means chickens that were not raised in battery cages.

From the Mailbag
The animal advocacy group Compassion Over Killing has created a new website to bring attention to the fact that Morningstar Farms continues to use "battery eggs" from caged birds in their products. Hey Keith, I wanted to drop you a line on this because I thought it would be up your alley. Here is the link. Good stuff. Best, Chris

A Self-Interested Reason to Not Eat Meat
Here’s another self-interested reason to not eat meat: Drug-resistant bacteria are routinely found in beef, chicken, and pork sold in supermarkets. Here are just a few facts drawn from the column: Drug-resistant infections killed more than 65,000 people in the U.S. Drug-resistant infections are by no means rare. The problem is not new.

On "The Wild"
The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. We can choose not to kill and eat someone we do not need to eat in order to survive. Yes, that's true.

On the Renewed Debate Over Horse Slaughter
The problem is that people are abandoning and neglecting horses, and to address that problem--to address the problem that people abandon horses--we'll kill the horses? What happened to all of the talk of tradition and the American West and culture and the horse's unique place in our history and how horses are different from cows and chickens?

On Objections to Slaughterhouses Not Sandwich Shops
Briefly: Zoning board in Buffalo unanimously approved plans for a slaughterhouse (as in, a place where chickens, goats, lambs and calves will be killed and chopped up). I think I'm going to start a contest for the most absurd/ironic/bizarre sentence to come out of the mouth of a human each week.

On the Banning of Eating Cats and Dogs in China
It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. If you don't have to enslave, rape, dominate, or kill someone (or have someone else do it for you), why would you? No one will propose a ban on eating chickens because there's no conflict there. What do you think?
