There have been good numbers of Australian Wood Ducks near the dam recently. Australian Wood Ducks and Black-shouldered Lapwings. Another small body of water well below the trail adds Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal and Chestnut Teal to the list and then a lone Australasian Grebe. Two Cattle Egrets with four cows!

Wedge-tailed Eagle -bigger than the cattle!? We also found our first Pink-eared Ducks for 2021 and also Red-kneed Dotterels. The birds appeared to know they needed to move to and the Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks were flying away from the storm. We expect the Red-kneed Dotterels will breed here once again.

At the shallow natural clay-pan where the three Pink-eared Ducks were hiding in plain sight there were many other bird species. One cattle footprint full of water can mean survival for many bird species. Despite the water being very shallow and muddy there was a White-necked Heron as shown in the header photo.

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. But such a shallow water depth doesn’t work for our many duck species, and these, along with most gulls, terns, grebes, and larger shorebirds, were nowhere to be seen after the first two weeks of January. But mostly, there was just lots and lots of water.

Even the Pacific Black Ducks have decided they need to stand on the gate to get out of the water when they have had enough! Pacific Black Ducks out of water! The predominant duck at the moment in that area is the Hardhead.

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Black-bellied Whistling Ducks in the aftermath of the “storm” Hoping for different fortunes at a different time of day, we stayed until darkness enveloped us but still, nothing.

Our three summer Duck species, Mexican, Ruddy, and Fulvous Whistling-Duck , expand to as many as thirteen species. And while all three of our common Egrets ( Great , Snowy , and Cattle ) are to be seen everywhere you look, only the American White Pelicans are as common as the Shovelers and Pintails. A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Plumed-Whistling-Ducks. In one hour in the evening, amongst all the thunder and lightning, 88mm of rain fell and by the morning we had received 326mm of rain. It is a slow process sorting out the flood damage.

Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Colusa NWR was beginning to fill its impoundments during this drought, and there were quite a few ducks and geese present. Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. There were no ducks, herons or ibis and only one Great Egret in the length of the gorge that you can walk. As we all well know there is something very different about 2020.

You first encounter the Magpie Geese with Cattle Egret along Fiddlers Lane in the mango orchards and they are taking advantage of the shade and the fallen mangos. There are Great Egrets, Cattle Egrets and Intermediate Egre ts around the lagoon and the Intermediate Egrets came rather close to me as they fed. Dingo at the lagoon.

The fence-lines were also good roost sites for the many Whiskered Terns and the majority of the ducks in the deeper water were Pacific Black Ducks and Hard Heads. Grey Teal roosted around a dam alongside Black-fronted Dotterels and Red-kneed Dotterels and Australian Pratincoles were well-camouflaged amongst the cattle.

As we came through the open fields towards the coast there were numerous Cattle Egrets among the cattle and Straw-necked Ibis.
