Creature Update
From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. As for Project Treadstone, after several false starts, trapping, spaying and neutering will resume next week. Greyhound skin is very thin. But alas, the supply has dwindled.

Book: Shift Your Habit
Most shelter animals are spayed or neutered, have been treated for worms, and have at least their first set of shots. Shift-It Tip: If you’re set on a purebred dog or cat, buy one from a rescue association instead of getting a pedigree from a breeder. Instead of buying toys, you can delight dogs and cats with stuff you already own.

Quantico Has No Compassion for Feral Cats
Quantico Military Base is really behaving cruelly when it comes to the feral cats on its base. Frizzell explained that a large population of feral cats is ultimately detrimental to the overall environmental health of the base, its native species and ecosystems. Feral cats may be an animal problem, but there is a human solution.

Helping Feral Cats in Your Neighborhood
Cory Williams, of the famed "Mean Kitty" YouTube videos (which are really funny), has a good how-to video about doing a trap, spay/neuter, and release of feral cats in your neighborhood. The video was done on behalf of the Stray Cat Alliance. Tags: feral cats

Kittens!
Some time ago a neighborhood stray cat came to the yard to have her kittens. This little mama cat was super smart and found her way into the hot tub, and here are her little kittens snuggled up in a flower pot. Sadly, shelters and rescues are full of cats and are already full. They sure are cute though, aren’t they?

Pahokee Opens for Project Treadstone
They will spay/neuter, vaccinate, tip ears and microchip , and they do not test. Sure, it takes an hour to get there and I have no idea how I'm going to get 10 cats in my car or even trap 10 cats, but I'm still enjoying the honeymoon phase of the concept and reveling in some kind of victory I had nothing to do with.

From Today's New York Times
California’s shelter populations have declined in recent decades, and most pet owners (70 percent dog, 84 percent cat) are acting responsibly and spaying/neutering their pets without government involvement. Lisa Peterson Director of Club Communications, American Kennel Club New York, July 31, 2007
