One of the ways I could describe the unique mix of birds I can see here in southwestern Mexico, would be to divide our species into five categories. The invasive species are few, but, unfortunately, very numerous. But there is a final group of species here, about which I have not written very much.

Next stops offered White-crowned Parrot and Barred Parakeets , Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers , Collared Aracari , half a dozen Purple-throated Fruitcrows … I heard a strong double-nock of a huge Pale-billed Woodpecker , but the bird didn’t present itself to our eyes. Next goal: 1100 species, to cover about 10% of the total.

Perhaps one of my reasons for going to the lake was that it guarantees more species in one day than any of my other sites. But I am also always eager to get a better handle on the migration dates for our wintering species, and April is a great month for that. This Plover is a Semipalmated, and should be leaving for Canada any day now.

For example, Bluebird ID in the United States and Canada is a simple proposition: if you are in the West, they are Western, while in the East, they are Eastern. and Canada and winter in northeastern Mexico, while the sedentary wrens of central Mexico, Central America, and South America are now to be identified as Grass Wrens. That’s 100% Barn Owl butt, right there. The name Sedge Wren is to be used for the migratory wrens that summer in the U.S.

The same can be said of Scarlet Tanagers, Canada Warblers and Eastern Wood-Pewees. Based on population estimates and migration routes, yes, millions, and for some species, many millions! With a Rustic Bunting in Homer, Alaska, Neil Hayward has tied Sandy Komito’s American Birding Assocation area big year record of 745 (+3) species. That is a lot of birds in what is essentially Alaska, Canada, and the lower 48 states in one year. But whats with the (+3)? That’s where things get kind of fun.

Now is when we can venture into the closest park and see birds of the deep woods, species that breed far from town. Thousands of birds have yet to fly through Costa Rica, in particular, the “late migrants” like Canada Warbler , various tyrant-flycatchers, and Yellow-billed Cuckoos. Thus, I can pinpoint my first pelagic trip, as it added 13 new species. I’ve submitted 448 such checklists.

A thrill to see, especially to see well, the Cape May Warbler is most commonly spotted as a passage migrant or as a winter resident, considering that its breeding area is the spruce-fir forests of Canada and some of the northernmost parts of the United States. We had been at sea for 5 days and 5 nights, over 100 miles off shore, sailing non-stop from the USA-Canada border to San Francisco. Montreal, while far to the north of New York City, is in Canada, which is certainly not the Adirondacks. Hearing Winter Wrens singing right next to the trail while a distant Hermit Thrush sang its lovely, lonely song. In one of the few areas with a decent amount of open water I was surprised to see Canada Geese with young.

Those would be species like the Keel-billed, White-throated, and Toco Toucans , the latter of which has become such an iconic rep. for its kind that even in Costa Rica, images of the Brazilian species have been used for marketing (much to the chagrin and dismay of local birders). The sighting was easily the best I have ever had of the species, and it was in and out of view for about twenty minutes, foraging in small circuits but always coming back to the stand of thick brush where I had first spotted it.

The country of Mexico as a whole, is host to 27 different species of doves, with the California Baja Sure home to six. With a large number of sub-species in many of these doves, I have listed the actual sub-species for this area. A common migratory species, is the Mourning Dove , Zenaida macroura marginella.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Common Yellowthroat gives me a cozy, familiar, all is right with the world glow, as does the song of the candy-striped Yellow Warbler and the strident call of the confiding Ovenbird. His is the reputation that survives today when it comes to paintings of birds, and rightfully so.

A Field Guide to the Birds: Giving Field Marks of All Species Found in Eastern North America was published in 1934 by Houghton Mifflin (note–Peterson was 26 years old), after being rejected by four publishers. Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species.
