This Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker in particular is a species I would like to get much better photos of. For quite a few birders visiting Wuyuan, the main reason is to see the Blue-crowned Laughingthrush. While the female is less hidden, sadly, it is also less attractive. Such a cute bird deserves a better representation.

They will feed up there and then head north to Siberia to breed. The shorebirds are starting to get their breeding plumage and the first to show some colour are the male Bar-tailed Godwit. For a researcher to get from Broome to Beijing it would take over 30 hours, as you would be required to fly south first!

The Golden-tailed Woodpecker shares something with the German flag – it is called golden-tailed even though to me the color of its tail is yellow, not golden. No doubt the woodpecker has similar considerations.
