The other day I was exploring a new area for the first time, birding the national park that I’ve watched only in BBC documentaries, the place famous for the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world – more than 1300 pairs! Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones). Have you heard of it? Can you pinpoint it on a map?

Greece: Pelicans galore at Lake Kerkini

At the same time, one Black Stork wades through the shallows, right next to the road. We are entering a long boat and sail by the wooden poles in the water, decorated with Common Terns (and one Black Tern that I’ve dipped), towards the greatest attraction of the lake, the pelican colony. Dalmatian Pelicans – nesting platform.

Birding Porto Lagos Lagoons, Greece, or the snake-cold Vergina lager

The best birding season here is the winter when waterbirds come to overwinter in those lagoons, followed by migratory seasons and, to a lesser extent, breeding season. Fortunately, late June is the right season for the locally brewed snake-cold Vergina lager in the deepest shade by some gull-filled beach.

But it was the Long-billed Dowitchers who were really rocking their breeding plumage. Almost all the flying birds in the heading photo above are Dowitchers (with American White Pelicans behind them), and those are only one part of the total I saw along both lake shores. How on earth do they breed so quickly up north?)

Pink in Africa

Africa has two resident pelican species, the huge and widely distributed Great or Eastern White Pelican and the smaller Pink-backed which is restricted to Africa, the southern Arabian peninsula and Madagascar (where it may now be extinct.) To reach Prespa Lakes, from Niki continue through Florina, from there right for Albania and veer right for the lakes. If heading to the Kerkini, two kilometres after the border take the left turn for Serres and drive until you spot the lake on you right hand side. Head for the sea only when you fully recharge your batteries.
