By late March, hordes of Laughing Gulls and multiple species of pelagic terns gather for their turn. These isles of Saint Giles are beaten tirelessly by the wind from the open ocean, the hardy vegetation present is gnarled and contorted. Both Brown and Red-footed Boobies actively breed on Little Tobago as well as Saint Giles.

With 500 pages, this guide is a bit on the heavy side, but still not too much, having in mind that half of the region falls into the tropics and the edition is dealing with almost a thousand species (989 to be exact). Maybe these people like challenges – at least here at the monastery, getting good shots of this species is quite easy. Another species apparently enjoying the proximity of a monastery is the White-winged Grosbeak. My extensive birding experience allows me to be very confident that the bird below is a Rosefinch.

From our experience the greatest risk is when the shorebirds take off in a panic flight and clip each other’s wings and several fall into the sea. The shorebirds are heavily camouflaged on the rocks at Gantheaume Point and it is easy for people to wander across the rocks and have no idea that they are present.

You wonder how some species even know the water is present, but we would never complain… especially when such great birds as Buff-banded Rails drop by! There were numerous birds stood around the edge of the lake and they were still in their breeding plumage and had their bills open in the heat.
